A new environmental facility near Chester is helping solidify Nova Scotia’s position as a leader in the green economy.

The Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre is currently being developed on an 800 – acre parcel of land 20 minutes north of Chester to include an eco park for green business, a training and research centre for environmental innovation and a leading edge waste management facility.

A name change for the landfill and Eco Park site was presented to and approved by Council this spring. The name of the site has officially been changed from the Kaizer Meadow Solid Waste Management Facility to the Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre to reflect the complete range of services that will be available at the Eco Park and Waste Management Facility. The Eco Park is close to signing its first tenant. A new website, www.KaizerMeadow.ca, is live and provides an in-depth overview of the facility.

The Kaizer Meadow Solid Waste Management Facility, which currently occupies the site, is recognized internationally as a leader in solid waste resource management.  It is the first facility of its kind to introduce a comprehensive waste water treatment system that results in zero discharge of waste into waterways, and is also home to Canada’s first GPS – operated landfill compactor that optimizes compaction rates, thereby reducing the facility’s waste footprint.

Building on the success of this project, the Municipality of the District of Chester is establishing a leading edge eco park and training facility that will improve the economy, support the creation of knowledge – based jobs and enhance the environment.

The Eco Park will be a location of choice for green businesses, and will help tenants shrink their environmental footprint by adding value to the local ecology, assisting with safe and efficient methods of disposing of waste and reusing water and other resources. Tenant benefits include unparalleled access to waste management facilities and expertise, and access to pre – used materials for remanufacturing.

The design for the Eco Park is nearing completion and construction is scheduled to begin this year.
