The Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years. Scaling this time down to 46 years we have been around for 4 hours and our Industrial Revolution began just 1 minute ago. During this short time period we have ransacked the planet for ways to get fuels and raw materials, have been the cause of extinction of an unthinkable amount of plants and animals, and have multiplied our population to that of a plague.

Despite all of the damage we have caused the environment most of it is reversible. We can restore habitats and return species to them; clean rivers; renovate buildings; replenish the topsoil, replant forests.

-ThinkQuest

Everyone knows that the time is now to be green and to start to undo the damage that has been done to the planet. The staff at Kaizer Meadow and the Municipality of Chester are working hard to ensure that no harm is done to the environment surrounding the site and that it is as good or better than it was when the site was opened.

Among the environmentally friendly practices that are in place at Kaizer Meadow is the daily landfill cover. While every landfill operation must have their landfill cell covered at the end of the day, many use clay or dirt and take up a lot of airspace that could be used for garbage.

Kaizer Meadow and the Municipality of the District of Chester invested in a state-of-the-art Alternate Daily Cover Machine. It uses a mix of used paper, polymer and grape seed oil (among other things) to create a paper mâché sort of substance that is sprayed over the landfill garbage. This creates a layer that is ¼ of an inch thick and saves a lot of airspace.

Read more about the Alternate Daily Cover Machine here.

How many landfill sites have you visited that smelled pleasantly of grapes? Not many, I’m willing to wager! So come on out and see what we’re all about at the Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre.

Lets throw in a riddle to get your brain working before I let you go!

I have no voice, and yet I speak to you, I tell of all the things in the world that people do. I have leaves but am not a tree, I have pages, but I am not a bride or royalty. I have a spine and hinges, but am not a man or a door. I have told you all, I cannot tell you any more. What am I?
